Charlotte Lucas - Pride and Prejudice
Why should you be surprised, my dear Eliza? — Do you think it incredible that Mr. Collins should be able to procure any woman’s good opinion, because he was not so happy as to succeed with you?
WE LOVE THE WOMEN THAT THE FANDOM HATES (click for more info)
Ok… fandom doesn’t so much hate Charlotte as they do harshly judge her. Scrolling through the Charlotte Lucas tags here on tumblr makes me sad.
I lost count how many people said they won’t “settle” like Charlotte did and it just hurts my heart. Because Charlotte was a strong independent woman seeking her own kind of freedom. She didn’t “settle” she chose the life she wanted. She’s right that not all of us (and especially not in her time period) have the luxury of falling deeply in love. Furthermore, not all of us WANT that kind of life partner. I think Charlotte choosing what she wants is JUST AS strong as Lizzy choosing to wait for a passionate love.
That’s not to say Charlotte isn’t flawed, she is certainly. I mean, she’s not exactly helping change society’s opinions of women’s roles by dictating how Jane should act around Mr. Bingley. But she’s no more flawed than Elizabeth or Jane is in their own ways. I just think people latch onto her practicalness as something to look down upon when really it’s what makes her such a unique character in the book/movies to me.
Also while so much of the book hinders on pointing out Darcy’s flawed pride I really think the moment Charlotte announces her engagement is a brilliant mirror back to Elizabeth and it highlights her own strong prejudices against anything she disagrees with.
